Fiction, hand-picked.

We only sell novels

No business books. No memoirs. Nothing with a subtitle that promises to change your life in seven days. Just novels — four hundred of them at a time, every one read by one of us before it earned a place on the shelf.

Shop the Shelves The Novel Book Club

Our beginning

How we started

There were two of us, and between us we spent a little over a decade behind the counter of a shop that sold everything: cookbooks, calendars, the occasional cushion. Every year the fiction section moved further back. First it lost the window. Then it lost the front table. By the end it was two shelves near the stockroom, behind the greetings cards, which is a hard place to fall in love with a novel.

We kept a list of the books we wished we could put in people's hands, and a longer list of the ones nobody was ever going to find back there. When the shop changed hands again, we took the lists and left.

Novel is the shop we wanted to work in. Fiction is not a department here, or a corner, or a shelf we defend in meetings — it is the entire shop. Four hundred novels, chosen by hand, and nothing else on the premises. No business books. No memoirs. Nothing with a subtitle that promises to change your life.

Our rules

How we choose

Four rules, written down, kept to. They are the reason the shop is small and the reason you can trust what is on it.

Rule one

One of us finishes every book before it is listed

Not skimmed, not read about, not taken on the word of a jacket quote. If a novel is on the shelves, one of us read it to the last page. It is the slowest part of the job and the only part we would not give up.

Rule two

No paid placement, no publisher buying shelf space

Nobody pays to be near the top of a page. No publisher has ever bought a position in this shop, and none ever will. Where a book sits is decided by whether we liked it, and by nothing else.

Rule three

Roughly 400 titles is the whole shop

That is the entire stock, not a category. When something arrives, something leaves. It keeps the shelves honest: a novel has to earn its place against the three hundred and ninety-nine already here.

Rule four

We say when we did not like a famous book

If a much-praised novel left us cold, we will tell you so, and say why. A shop that likes everything is not recommending anything. You are allowed to disagree with us, and we would rather you did.

What we're bad at

Three things we will not pretend to be good at

Every bookshop page has a paragraph about how much they care. Here is the other column instead: the parts of running Novel that are slower, plainer and less convenient than the shop down the road. You should know them before you order.

One

Shipping is a day slower

Your parcel leaves the shop a day later than it would from one of the big retailers. We pack by hand, in paper, and one of us writes the address. If you need a novel tomorrow morning, order it elsewhere and we will not be offended.

Two

No loyalty points

There is no points scheme, no card to stamp, no tier that unlocks free delivery. We would rather keep the price of the book honest than build a system that rewards you for buying books you did not want. Buy four novels or forty and the price is the same.

Three

Special orders take about two weeks

If you want a novel we do not stock, ask us and we will order it in. It usually takes about two weeks to reach you, sometimes a little longer if the publisher is slow. We will tell you the honest date before you pay, not after.

And one more, for the record

We do not stock business books, memoirs, or anything with a subtitle that promises to change your life. That is not a fault exactly, but it is a limitation, and people ask us about it most weeks.

If any of the above is a problem, write to us and say so. We answer every message ourselves, usually the same day.

The shop, in numbers

Four hundred titles, eleven thousand novels, four thousand eight hundred parcels

No dashboards, no growth charts. These are the only figures we keep, and we keep them because they are the ones we can actually stand behind.

400 Titles in stock

That is the whole shop. When a new novel arrives, another one leaves the shelf to make room for it.

11,000 Novels read between us

Counted honestly, over years of working in bookshops, and still going up by roughly one a week each.

4,800 Parcels posted last year

Wrapped by hand in paper, addressed by hand, and walked to the post office in batches.

1 Shop assistant who is a dog

She does not recommend books. She does, however, approve of anyone who stays long enough to read a page.
