We look for sentences that do something a plot summary cannot. A book earns this shelf when we finish it and immediately want to argue with someone about it.
We want the puzzle to be fair and the people to be real. A clever twist on its own will not get a book onto this shelf; a clever twist that hurts will.
Ideas first, but never ideas alone. We look for futures that tell us something uncomfortable about the present, and for prose that would stand up without the spaceships.
We look for the past rendered as a place people actually lived, not a costume. If the research shows through the seams, it does not come home with us.
We look for translations that read as though they were written in English, and for books that could only have been written somewhere else. Both at once is the standard.
We look for the ones still worth the hours, not the ones merely assigned. Every classic here is a book we would hand to a friend without a single apology.

Orders of $35 or more travel free, anywhere we post. Below that, shipping is a flat $4.50. Everything is wrapped in paper and board — no plastic, nothing rattling around loose in the box.
Order before the end of the working day and your parcel leaves the shop the next working day. You will get an email the moment it is on its way, with tracking where the carrier offers it.
If a novel is not for you, send it back within 30 days and we will refund it in full. Read it first if you like — we would rather you gave it a fair go than judged it by the cover. Just tell us it is coming.
If a book arrives marked, or it is not the title you ordered, email us a line about it and we will post a replacement or refund you — your choice, and no need to send the first one back.
Returns go to the same address the parcel came from, and refunds are issued to your original payment method within five working days of the book reaching us. Gift cards are not refundable for cash, but they never expire.
